ABOUT US
"Trees are the poems the earth writes upon the sky."
Kalil Gibran
Trees may be poems… but wood is tenacious. It has a will all its own. Every piece I’ve created…every bowl, every spoon, every vase is a complex, unfolding, interaction between my vision and the will of the wood.
Over the years, I’ve learned that working with hand tools allows the wood the time it needs to guide my eyes and hands toward the discovery and unveiling of the form within.
Carving with an axe, surprisingly, is an extremely delicate process. An axe cannot force the wood to become something. The wood has it’s own desires and the axe can only follow the grain.
It’s not the making of things that drives me to create; it’s the process of creating that fuels me. I’m constantly making new discoveries about myself, the materials I work with, the tools I choose, the inner workings of my mind. I’m fascinated by the constant interplay between mind and eye and hand and material. One influences the other, the other influences this, and the hands… guided by the wood… bring it into existence. While one works, the others endlessly wander and explore and imagine.
This is the catalyst that drives my creativity: the joy of being immersed in this ever-evolving interplay. This is why I make so many different things, why my designs are so diverse. One idea or discovery or concept inexorably leads to another.
Some days I feel like a leaky tap that just won’t stop dripping.
AxeWood was founded in 2018 to allow me to pursue my passion for design and creation.
